Harbors also known as seaports are the sea-transport facilities in Cities XL. So far they only include two Inter-City buildings, the Small Harbor and Large Harbor, both of them providing Freight inter-city transport.

All Harbors need to be placed in suitable areas on coasts (marked on the Resource Layer as Port area). Note that placement of Harbors is not possible on all maps! Also, be warned that Harbors emit some Air Pollution.

Small Harbor

The Small Harbor is an Inter-city connection that links your city to other cities by sea.

The harbor provides both Freight trading capabilities (40 units) and in-city freight service, while emitting a miniscule amount of air pollution in a small area.

On island maps the Small harbor is much more important - it is the first and main Inter-city connection for both Freight and Passengers. As such, it is modified to cost much less to plop (only 5000 c), and is available from the start. It also provides both Freight and Passenger services.

The Small harbor is an important Freight alternative even on normal peninsular maps. It costs quite a lot to build, but it provides very good Freight services for its price, and thus allows development of Industries in other areas, far from the edges of the map.

Large Harbor

The Large Harbor is an Inter-city connection.

It is 10x more expensive than the Small Harbor but offers mass Transportation (100 units) between your cities. The range in which it provides Freight services is much larger, and its trade capacity - much bigger. Paradoxically, while the large harbor looks like the cross between a cruise ship port and marina (so commercial/tourist/passenger), it provides solely freight. There are mods that change that. One makes the default harbor into a low polluting passenger harbor while adding custom industrial harbors that provide freight.

Future Development

The NEXL mod is working to bring along more sea-transport variations, including In-city Ferry transport. It will also introduce waterways, both for Inter- and for In-city transport, allowing you to connect all sea facilities into working networks! There is also the Harbor XL mod (soon to be released), which will allow construction of custom modular harbors with strong industrial capacities and bonuses.
